Suggest that you create a folder on your Desktop for the laptop, call it Mail. Then copy all the DBX files from the the main computer to that Mail folder on the Desktop, and once that's done, right click the DBX files and clear the Read-Only attribute on the Properties. Then open Outlook Express on the laptop, click File/Import/Messages, selecting OE6 and From a Store Folder and point it to the Mail folder on the laptop's Desktop. Should work w/o a problem.
The file path to the Store Folder will be shown in Outlook Express under Tools/Options/Maintenance and Store Folder button for the main machine and on the laptop as well. You can use the tab key then to highlight that file path, then press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard, open an example of Explorer and in the address bar, click Ctl+V to paste the path info the address bar. What may also be causing another problem in that in Windows 2000/XP, the DBX files are hidden by the operating system which you can fix by opening Explorer, clicking Tools/Folder Options, then the View tab and uncheck the box to Hide System Files.

Jim,
Wonderful, that works. I now have OE back on my wife's side, Microsoft
Outlook on my side. OE shows on Start/All Programs and did not before
following your suggestion. I want to avoid a repeat debacle if possible.
On the laptop OE Store Folder the long path location is listed, same as on
the desktop. This is Documents and Settings/Name/Local Settings/Application
Data/Identities, etc. However on the laptop Windows Explorer there is no
such path. I cannot find Local Settings/application/Identites. I am
concerned that if I can import files and addresses to the laptop OE will it
take since the path does not seem to be there (in Explorer anyway) although
it shows up in the Store Folder? Thanks again for getting me started; just
need to plug along and complete if possible.

Have you searched for the executable file, msimn.exe and double clicked it
to see if Outlook Express will open? If so, then delete any existing
shortcuts you may have and create a new one with the correct file path to
msimn.exe and use it.
For info on how to correctly backup/restore mail messages and other parts of
Outlook Express, see this link:
