Be more precise when describing what you are seeing.
A server error shows up in the Status bar message
with the "not downloaded" statistic.

It looks as if both of you are referring to the counts of unread
messages which show up in the either a account subscription list
or in the Folder list. Turn on the Status bar (Alt-V,L,u) and see
if the counts listed in the "not downloaded" statistic don't match
the "unread" number you may be seeing elsewhere.

If you want you can analyse the symptom in detail
by activating the troubleshooting log for news.
Here is a previous reply about that option.

In addition to Tom's cases you may be seeing
what some call "phantoms" but which are really
only arithmetic quirks.

To check on that possibility turn on Troubleshooting
Logging for News (Alt-T,O,Ctrl-Backtab,w) and refresh
the newsgroup (e.g. press F5). Then stop the trace
and find the log (a file which has the same name as the
account you are using and having an extension of .log)

You will find a line in the log containing
[tx] GROUP followed by the newsgroup name
followed by a line containing
[rx] 211 and three numbers.
Rather than describe the numbers further abstractly
I'll hope that you can draw your own generalized
inferences about them from a real example.

Here is an example from a newsgroup which had
the problem:
[rx] 211 332 1209 1534
This says that the newsgroup is currently holding
messages which start numbering at 1209 and
end numbering at 1534 (implying that there are
at most 1534-1209+1 = 326 possible messages).
However, the first number means "Here's an _estimate_
of the number of messages you can download".
OE misinterprets this value to mean "Here is the
absolute total number of messages you can download".
In this example the estimate is completely nonsensical
(more in the estimate than possible in the range);
nevertheless OE grimly maintains that there are
332 messages to download. Therefore, even if you
did get all 326 possible messages downloaded
it would still show you in your status bar that there are
6 more which haven't been downloaded.
