They go nowhere, even if you choose to download them. ;-)

No, they don't. It is like this: The sender of the HTML email integrates
pictures and other content from his webspace as _links_ in the message.
If the message is displayed and the content is _not_ blocked, the email
client has to download that content in order to display it. It stays
on the webspace nonetheless, OE would then just be downloading a copy
of it.
Erm, I hope, this clears things up a bit?
