Help, please: transferring files

My father-in-law just got a new HP computer running Windows XP with IE6 and
OE6.0 already installed. His old computer has OE6.0 also, but running under
Windows 98. I want to transfer his address book and all message files from
the old to the new, have followed instructions, but it just doesn't happen.
The address book .wab files get onto a CD okay, but the new computer can't
read them, let alone put them inthe right place.
As for messages, I have dropped all his old .mbx, .dbx and (I think) .dbi
(or maybe .mbi) files in the proper place, but OE on the new computer won't
respond to them. The instructions in OE for transferring files are a bit
vague going from one computer to another, most Help info deals with
interfacing with Netscape or maybe transferring to/from Outlook. There must
be a way to do this; can someone point me in the right direction? Many
thanks!
