Regardless of which AV program you get, make sure you disable email scanning and any anti-spamware with the product. There is no program I've seen (not tested but from anecdotal evidence from this NG and email) that is compatible with OE.
See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3
The OE message store is too fragile for these programs and tons of people are losing messages due to them.

Thanks, Steve for the prompt and kind reply. I have read numerous referrals in this group that were pro - AVG. I checked the link you provided, and as far as I am able to tell, it would indeed be adequate for me. I am assuming you recommend I retain Zone Alarm et.al.
Thanks
Terry

"Terry Haeber" <Terry Haeber@xxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:uNCKSwhbFHA.3620@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxWhile I realize that that my questions are not best directed to this newsgroup, I read this one regularly. I have benifited greatly from it and have come to trust and value the advice that you contributors offer to those of us with less experience. Hoping you will bear with me, here goes.
I have had NAV for a few years and have experienced some problems with it, but not as many or severe as others. It appears the common concensus is that there are far better products available. My NAV subcscripion expires shortly and I am in a bit of a quandry in reaching a renewal decision.
I also have and run regularly Zone Alarm, Stinger, Hijack This, Spy Subtract, CW Shredder, and Ad-Aware-SE Personal, and update regularly. And yes, PA Bear, I do not archive in my Inbox or Sent Items, I empty Deleted Items at least once a day, I manually compact daily as well as emptying TIF's, offline content etc. In short, I do take the advice offered here seriously - sometimes after Googleing for a second , third etc. opinion - but I do respect all of your knowledge. Sorry I cannot name all of you as this post would be far too lengthy.
Back to my questions:
1. In the last three weeks, NAV has popped up stating it has intercepted a possible Virus - Trojan Byte? - but for three years previous I have received no such notifications. Could this sudden "flurry" be due to my subscription coming to term?
2. Zone Alarm, which I am extremely happy with gives me no notifications of interceptions. Could this be because they are happy to operate behind the scene and do not feel it necessary to jump up and shout "look what I've done"? ZA does inform me when a program is trying to access the Internet, and I am cautious as to what I allow, but is it possible I'm missing something or have made a mistake in configuration? I have received from ZA in the past six weeks enough requests from Live Update Module for access to make me feel NAV is using my computer more than I am.
3. In your - collective, I hope - opinion am I, as a not so informed individual adequately protected without NAV. Would it be best for me, based upon the preceeding to not resubscribe? Is there a product you would recommend for me and others in my situation if additional protection is required?
I realize that any advice or opinions offered are just that. I also know that the best way to learn is by taking advantage of the experience and advice of others and then applying it - with caution - to your own circumstances.
My appologies for being so long winded.
Terry
