The find message doesn't find any emails

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

It comes straight back without finding any emails at all.
I have checked the current view and "show all messages" is ticked. I have
read the Tom Koch article (very useful and clear) about maintenance and gone
through all the options. I have been talked through remove and install by my
computers supplier (Toshiba) and still no improvement. I have run all virus,
adware and spybot checks - though I don't seem to be able to download the
latest security etc updates.
