Re: KB837009 update problem

Reinstalling IE and OE is what got me into this predicament in the first place...
I did the reinstall of IE and OE again with no luck. I still get an error mesage trying to uninstall the earlier patch and still get the error message trying to install KB837009.
During both *overinstalls* (using IE6Setup.exe already on your machine), did you disconnect from the internet, disable your anti-virus application and close all running applications other than Explorer.exe (Windows Explorer) before beginning?
I've never heard of any updates persisting in Add/Remove Programs after doing an overinstall of IE6 this way in Win98.
Do you have Windows Critical Update Notification utility (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;224420) installed? Is it what's telling you that you need 837009 or are you going to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com and getting the notice?
From your previous replies, it would seem that you do have the filesinstalled from the most recent Cumulative Update for OE (823353) and are as up-to-date as possible in Win98. If you can live with this annoying but inconsequential bug, do so. <wink>
If not, see:
How to Remove Internet Explorer 6 or Outlook Explorer 6 by Reinstalling Windows:

After doing so, check in at Windows Update again to install (1) IE6 SP1 and go back to install (2) all post-IE6 updates.

I had already renamed it back before trying your suggestions. Reinstalling IE and OE is what got me into this predicament in the first place. I was only having problems with IE and I also checked the OE box in the programs to install menu. > > I know you tried "reinstalling the OE part again" but have you tried > overinstalling both IE and OE, as I suggested and exactly as I > outlined?...
I did the reinstall of IE and OE again with no luck. I still get an error mesage trying to uninstall the earlier patch and still get the error message trying to install KB837009. If I try to install it at the Windows Update site, it downloads then during the install the progress bar gets only about a tenth of the way through and it says it is installed yet when I go back, it says I still need it. As long as everything is working, I may just ignore this. There is an entry for Outlook Express in the add/ remove programs section. I have not tried this and am not sure if this uninstall is also broken, but what would I need to back up if I were to try this route?
Thanks for all the help
