Sunday AM - I brought computer back to her in order to use cable (I have

We went to msn home page and hit mail icon - opens Outlook Express. Tried to
receive/ send mail - got the following Error message(s):

I didn't have time to do anything more.
What Bruce said.
Again, can use Internet OK, but can't update AdAware, SpyBot etc. (can't on
dial-up either). Also, computer is not shutting down on its own, but will
go into Standby OK.
Probably several problems here; I'm trying to take care of O.E. one first,
but maybe they're all intertwined.

No doubt.
Assuming her Norton AntiVirus (NAV) subscription is current, can you manually seek & install updates? The first order of business would be to run a full system scan with NAV in Safe Mode. See http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=5878
If updating NAV is impossible, you might:
1. Run at least two (2) of these free, online scans: http://aumha.org/secure.php#freeav
(I'd recommend selecting RAV as the second scan => Check the Autoclean option before scanning!)
2. Download Sysclean and the current Controlled Pattern Release (CPR) file to one (1) folder on your machine, save the folder to CD, transfer it to her machine and then scan, per http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=10610
You're truly a Knight in Shining Armor for this neighbor, Barbara, but sometimes the dragon's just too big for such a knight to slay. Consider cutting your losses and taking the machine to a reputable, independent neighborhood shop (i.e., not CompUSA, Best Buy, etc.) where they can (1) backup her data, (2) format and reinstall Windows, and (3) bring the data back to the "new" machine. I'd also have them take care of everything here before returning the machine to its owner:
Before You Connect a New Computer to the Internet http://www.cert.org/tech_tips/before_you_plug_in.html
This would include installing WinXP SP2 (and all post-SP2 updates), if it wasn't pre-installed when she bought it.
