When you delete a message from OE it goes from the folder to the deleted items folder, but the space in the file is the same. When you delete from the deleted items folder the space does not change. In order to get rid of that now wasted space, you have to compact the folders. Do a File | Folder | Compact all and then see if the file sizes change. If they don't, then the files are likely corrupt (an empty dbx file is about 59 to 150 Kbytes). So if the file sizes don't change after compaction and they are still large and OE shows no messages in them, then close OE and delete the files. If its one of the principal folders, OE will automatically rebuild it.

Even though I currently have no messages in my Outlook Express6 (WindowsXP SP2) Inbox, the Inbox.dbx file is 29095kb. In addition even though I have selected "Empty messages from 'Deleted Items' folder on exit" my Deleted Items.dbx file is 27451kb.
I would be most grateful if anyone can advise me why these files are so big and how they can be reduced. Can they be deleted or are they some form of backup?
Many thanks - Rob
