Deleting Outlook Express 6 .dbx files

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Even though I currently have no messages in my Outlook Express6 (WindowsXP
SP2) Inbox, the Inbox.dbx file is 29095kb. In addition even though I have
selected "Empty messages from 'Deleted Items' folder on exit" my Deleted
Items.dbx file is 27451kb.

I would be most grateful if anyone can advise me why these files are so big
and how they can be reduced. Can they be deleted or are they some form of
backup?

Many thanks - Rob
