How would one access a web mail service without using HTTP? They are not
allowing free accounts created since Sept. 24, 2004 to have HTTPMail access;
you have to pay for MSN Hotmail Plus to use HTTPMail access with MS Outlook
Express.

Nope. Definitely to discourage spammer abuse of the WebDAV servers which
pick up email from the client and send it on to the SMTP servers. This has
been a week point of WebDAV for a long time, and gotten the Hotmail SMTP
servers blocked more than once.

You get what you pay for...

This is true of IMAP servers and MSOE in general.

The GMail privacy issues are no greater than any web mail service privacy
issues. You leave information on servers that you don't control, you have no
privacy guaranties. You move information across routers in a store and
forward message system, you have no privacy guaranties. You want assured
privacy, use PGP, or something similar.
