(reposting - for some reason this didn't get posted as a reply to the
thread.)
Well, I had to go all the way down to the last URL before the spyware
ones... The one that had me run regsvr32 on 7, not 5 dlls did the trick.
A couple of questions.
1 - Assuming regsvr32 "registers" a dll, what might cause a dll to get
unregistered?
2 - Any idea how a dll can get unregistered? (If, indeed, I've got my
assumption and jargon right here.)
3 - http://www.oehelp.com/ielnk.aspx and at the bottom it had the
suggestion below. When I enter SFC in Run, something flashes by, but that's
the end of it. Since I didn't need it to solve the problem it's not
critical, but I'm curious. Might it do the same thing as regsvr32? I see
it's operating on one of the same dlls that I did that to.
You can also try this:
Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.
Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.
Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.
