Hi, Jim.
I have MSOE set up with several accounts which allow me to
select which of several servers will accept my mail. In the
case whose error message appears quoted below, the mail goes
to GeekISP (not Comcast). Their instructions include turning
on TLS. Apart from the one case noted below it's worked
every time. It would appear the mailservice provider has
his certs in order.
When the message started appearing I closed and reopened OE.
It hasn't appeared since. That suggests to me that OE was
confused and doing the wrong thing.
The same fix works for the same error when it appears, much
more frequently, while OE checks for new messages. Shut it
off, start it up, all's good for a day or so.

I have no interest in using my Comcast mail account though
it is set up and works. Their webmail interface is dog-slow
and they don't support IMAP.
Comcast is a red herring in this discussion.
