Did you make sure to opt OUT of Yahoo's marketing lists? During the
signup, there is a short line with a link that takes you to their
marketing preferences page. EVERYTHING is checked by default so get all
that crap. Go look at your account definition and check your marketing
preferences has ALL items unchecked. They claim it will take 10 days
before the changes are effected.
Of course, if you have been divulging your unmunged Yahoo e-mail address
everywhere (since that is your primary account) versus not divulging
your Hotmail account (because you don't use it) then that would account
for the increased levels of spam in your Yahoo account. Whenever
registering to use a web site, as many game sites do, or a forum, or
whenever divulging your e-mail address, you should start by giving them
an e-mail alias instead. Create a unique e-mail alias that is dispensed
to only one yet-to-be-trusted recipient. Then when you get spammed
through that unique alias, you'll know exactly who spammed you or sold
your e-mail address. I use Sneakemail.com to create e-mail aliases
on-the-fly. Rather than just a forwarding service, any replies you make
to a message received through a sneakemail alias goes back through their
server and all your mail server's headers are stripped out. Your reply
looks like it originated from Sneakemail's domain. Later when you find
that you don't get any spam through that alias, like 3 to 6 months
later, you can update your account with them to give them your real
e-mail address.
