Lost emails and folders after compacting

Got tired of seeing the compact msg on exiting OE and decided to do it. It
completed, I shutdown and the next time I brought up OE I was missing 6
months of emails in my inbox, no emails in sent items, 3 folders that I had
emails in were missing plus my newsgroup listing was all out of wack.
Checked the store location and the dbx files are there for the 3 missing
folders and sent items. I thought I would try something simple like copy
one of the 3 missing folders dbx files to another folder and do an import
but OE won't recognize it.
I checked the properties of the file and it looks the same as one that is
working fine.
I tried Bruce Hagen's suggestion to a post just 6 hours ago to someone with
a similar problem but got lost in the instructions.
Would someone please help me get my email straightened out?
