The default "Main Identity" is much more prone to such corruption than a
Named Identity, Steve.

How OE Stores Your Data
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/store.htm#storemain

In Windows Explorer, search for [WinKey+F] "*.dbx" [w/out the quotes]. [In
WindowsXP, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden.
To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and
Folders under Start>Control Panel>Folder Options>View. To find these files
in Explorer, enable Advanced Options and then check the first three boxes
under it.] These DBX files represent your OE Identity's store.

These DBX files should all be found in one folder [e.g., C:\Documents and
Settings\<User>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express, where {GUID} is the Global
Unique IDentifier (technical jargon for a unique long number) used to
specify an Identity]. For safety's sake, backup all files in this folder.

OLEXP: You Receive an Error Message or Are Unable to Start Outlook Express:

After completing all the steps, if you find your messages (folders) missing,
import them from your backup folder or the original location of your store
via Files>Import>...
