No, if I had been referring to 'Pop3uidl.dbx' then I would have actually
written 'Pop3uidl.dbx'. Odd though it may appear, in writing 'Pop3.log' I
was actually referring to a file called 'Pop3.log'. Strange, but true !
It is absolutely vital that I can access my messages from different
machines, so I have my settings such that anything I choose to delete gets
deleted off the servers, but if I choose to keep it then it stays on the
servers so I can read it on another machine too. What would be the effect
of regularly deleting the 'Pop3uidl.dbx' file ? I could do this in a log
on / log off script as a maintainance task. Would it in any way cause me to
lose access to some messages or cause duplicates to be downloaded ?
Kevin.

| Unless you need to access mail from more than one location, or

|| I tried that, but no reall effect. Then again, Temp Internet
|| Files is

|| One thing which concerns me is the size of the 'Pop3.log' file -
|| almost
|| three-and-a-hlaf Gigabytes ! My end of August backup shows
|| this as having
|| been only two Gigabytes in size, so it has grown since then.

||| Outlook Express 5.5 or 6 places a zero byte file in TIF for every
||| message that you read. These files are only visible from Start
||| Find
|||| Files of Folders, not from Windows Explorer. I had been
|| letting
||| them accumulate to see if they will affect OE's performance.
||| Finally, at something over 27,000 files it did. The gray flicker
||| upon opening a message changed from a fraction of a second to over
||| a second.
|||
||| Of course, I then cleared them and OE was cured.
|||
||| However, I did it by using deltree from DOS to empty TIF and forgot
||| to run smartdrv first. It took more that two hours. I don't think
||| I'll let them accumulate like that again.
|||
||| The easy way to get rid of them if you use OE 5.5 or 6 is to open
||| Internet Explorer and go to Tools | Internet Options. In the
||| Temporary Internet Files Section choose "Delete files". In the next
||| dialogue check the box for "Delete all offline content" and click
||| "OK".

|||| This problem is still continuing and, as a result, I am now
|||| spending about 12 hours per day waiting for e-mails to open. each
|||| one takes around 30 to 60
|||| seconds - very long messages take 3-4 minutes.
|||| I am now geting desperate ! With about 500 to 600 e-mails to sift
|||| through per day, I am left with insufficient time to get work done
|||| and sleep. I am
|||| amazed that there isn't a solution for this ! Some people have
|||| mentioned 'SP2' but I can't find any servie packs for Outlook
|||| Experess. Is this e-mail client program so badly flawed that it
|||| can't work correctly ?
|||| I am very nervous about updating anything, thanks to other
|||| messages I seen,
|||| I really cannot afford to start losing my store of old messages.

||||||||| Hopefully somebody can help with this very frustrating
||||||||| problem. Up to about a week ago, whenever I clicked on a
||||||||| message to see it in the preview pane - or even clicked on a
||||||||| folder which would show the first message in it - OE was able
||||||||| to display the message virtually instantly, certainly less
||||||||| than a second delay. Since then, for the past few days,
||||||||| whenever I select a message the preview pane is grey for
||||||||| about 15 seconds to a minute before the message shows. During
||||||||| this time OE will not respond to the
||||||||| keyboard or mouse and CPU usage flies up to at least 99% for
||||||||| msimn.exe. It is as if it is really hard work for OE to
||||||||| actually show a message in the preview pane.
||||||||| I get the same delay if I double-click the message to 'open'
||||||||| it up, or hit the 'forward' or 'reply' radio buttons.
||||||||| This doesn't seem to be a connection problem - I'm on ADSL
||||||||| 512K - as it occurs with messages in any folder or newsgroup.
||||||||| I've run SPyBot and got rid of any problems it reported but no
||||||||| change. Any ideas, anyone ?
||||||||| TIA,
||||||||| Kevin.
