How to set up OE 6 email to work on a laptop using different IP'S on the same server?

I am having trouble setting up a laptop to check email from inside our
office and from "on the road." The email from in the office is checked using
a wired LAN IP address for the server, example 192.x.x.x . If checked while
traveling and using a wireless hotspot it uses a web IP address. If I have
both IP addresses set up to be included when checking the email. I get an
error saying that it cannot connect to one or the other (depends on where it
is checked from). I have tried checking them individually, but depending on
which account is the default, I still get an error saying it cannot send
email from the outbox. Is there a way to set it up where it will send and
receive the email on the server from both IP addresses? The IT person says
if it is setup to only use the web IP. That it will not work in the office.
Thanks for any help you may offer.
