According to the logs, the HOST ICS PC checked the mail, found 15 messages, checked their
UIDs and found that they had all previously been downloaded and so decided to download
nothing.
The next day, the CLIENT PC checked the mail, found 16 messages, but not the same messages
that HOST PC found, checking the UIDs, at least the first message was one that the PC had
not previously downloaded, then started to download the first message when things got hung
up.
>From this there doesn't seem to be any general problem for the PC talking to the mail
server. And the message being downloaded was only 1921 bytes.
One possibility is that you have a corrupted Inbox in OE that is preventing from saving
the file to disk. To test this, in OE check Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder
for the location of the Store Folder. Then close OE and go to that Windows folder and
Rename INBOX.DBX to INBOXOLD.DBX. Then start OE. You will get a new empty Inbox. Try
the download again. If this works, then the Inbox was corrupted and there are utilities
to recover data from it. If this doesn't help, close OE and rename the folder back.
Another possibility is that the POP3UIDL.DBX (OE5+) file may be corrupted. This is used
to track previously downloaded messages when you leave messages on a POP3 server (Tools,
Accounts, Mail, Properties, Advanced). Delete the file with Outlook Express closed. (On
Win2000 you need enable the display of Hidden or System files in the folder options and XP
you need to use the advanced options to find Hidden or System files.) The next time all
mail on the server will be downloaded. But after that the file should function correctly
again.
If neither of those help, then something is getting in the middle between OE and the mail
server and causing problems.
Are you using Norton Internet Privacy? That's been known to cause some problems with
mail, but generally on sending, not receiving.
Are you using the Windows Fire Wall or another one or both? With XP SP2 (which you are
running), the XP firewall is enabled by default. If you were previously running another
firewall, you might now have 2 running and tripping over each other. In that case disable
one of them. Also, the Zone Alarm firewall does some e-mail attachment checking and so it
could potentially cause problems downloading mail.
One other thing that comes to mind are MTU sizes. You may want to compare the values on
the Host and client PCs. If they are different, I'd try making the Client PC the same as
the Host. See this article for how to check/change the values:
