To tell for sure what is going on, I'd need to see the full headers of both the original
message and the returned one. That includes all the Received header lines, as well as
From, To, CC, etc.

Besides this being a Read Receipt, it could be a message rule on the recipient's end
(either in his mail program or mail server), an anti-spam program bouncing the message as
spam, etc.
