Because of your post I had to retry this. Now it's working for me everywhere
except where I really want it to work which is in the Go to Folder dialog.
Before the above option would not persist even for the Folder list,
which apparently is the one which concerns most people.
I never use the Folder list, only use the Folder bar occasionally
and don't have any subfolders to worry about within my Local folders.

As before Go to Folder (Ctrl-y) with the above option unchecked
results in always collapsed lists of newsgroups which IMO is useless.
Therefore, I still need to use the option and the only disadvantage
of it then is that in order to keep the lists open I have to ensure that
at least one of the newsgroups contains an unread message.
Usually that is no trouble at all.
