Bob, is the surviving, original identity the default Main Identity? By any
chance, are the missing contacts in its Shared Contacts folder (View>Folders
and Groups)?

Start > Run > [type in] wab /a [note the space] > OK
Are they anywhere in here? See if you can export them from there (either as
WAB or text [CSV] file). If so, you can then import the exported file into
the surviving Address Book.

In WindowsXP and 2000, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked
as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden
Files and Folders under Start>Control Panel>Folder Options>View.
WinKey+F > search for *.wa~ [Advanced>Search hidden...]
Are they in any of these? Your automatically maintained backup Address
Books will have a WAB~ extension in SP2.
