Re: Changing Font Color

I hit the wrong key in responding and it was in the middle of a response.
Let me repeat again.

I booted Windows in the Safe mode and attempted to change the font color in
OE6 while working offline. I got the same result: Error 501

I ran msconfig and changed to the diagnostic mode, rebooted and again opened
up OE6 offline and attempted to change the font. I got the same result:
Error 501

While in the diagnostic mode I opened up the task manager and checked
APPLICATIONS. There were no applications running.

I opened PROCESSES and the following processes were listed:

EXPLORER.EXE
TASKMGR.EXE
SVCHOST.EXE
LSASS.EXE
SERVICES.EXE
WINLOGON.EXE
CSRSS.EXE
SMSS.EXE
SYSTEM
SYSTEM IDLE PROCESS

The system idle process was operating at 99%. I do no recognize any of the
processes as being related to any software that are other than Windows.

I rebooted after changing back to the normal operating mode in msconfig and
again attempted to change the font color. I got the same result. Error 501

Now follow my logic:

OE6 operated properly before the installation of XP/SP2. After the
installation (first by direct download, then by CD with no Virus Detection or
Firewall operating at the time of install) the problem of not being able to
change the font color appeared.

Removing the XP/SP2 update restored OE6 to the correct operating condition.

All the software that I used under normal operation was being used both
pre-install and post-install of XP/SP2.

The problem can be removed or reintroduced based on XP/SP2's installation or
removal.

Microsoft has published a list of numerous software interaction problems
caused by the code writers of XP/SP2.

If Microsoft had correctly written the Windows XP and Outlook Express
software in the first place, these security issues would have been taken care
of at the outset. I realize that is a difficult task under any circumstances
especially with the hackers uncovering new holes every day, but Microsoft
continues to PUSH software out the door to make money without thoroughly
checking it for incorrect coding, then trying to fix it after it is out in
the field.

THATS WHY I JUST GOT RID OF 8000 SHARES OF MICROSOFTL.

New holes appear daily...........

See CERT publications - ex: Technical Cyber Security Alert TA04-260A

Systems Affected

This vulnerability affects the following Microsoft Windows operating
   systems by default:

     * Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1
     * Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Service Pack 1
     * Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003
     * Microsoft Windows Server 2003
     * Microsoft Windows Server 2003 64-Bit Edition

Other Microsoft Windows operating systems, including systems running
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2, are not affected by default.
However, this vulnerability may affect all versions of the Microsoft
Windows operating systems if an application or update installs a
vulnerable version of the gdiplus.dll file onto the system

etc. etc. etc

As a final note I am requesting that you elevate this issue to the XP/SP2
problem solving team and giving them a shot to fix it.

All the best - John
