I don't know enough about VPN to say. Can you access web sites while the VPN is active?

It's possible to set up both Yahoo and Hotmail but they now both charge for that access.
But there are some other workarounds for those:

YPOPs
http://yahoopops.sourceforge.net/

E-mail gateway for Hotmail and Yahoo and auto-print.
http://www.tufans.com/Products/Relayer/index.html
http://www.tufans.com/Download/download.html and select ZdNet
IzyMail (replaces Pop3Hot) for AOL, MSN, Hotmail, Yahoo)
http://pop3hot.com/
Hotmail Popper

Lua FreePOPs for Web base mail sites
