Hi Bruce,
Thanks for your reply. My apologies for the delay, I've been out of town and
away from my desktop computer, so I'm just returning to my frustration and
attempts to improve on it.
I tried both of your suggestions, neither of which made a difference.
I had previously been using OE with XP SP1 and AOL dial-up, with Norton AV.
(NO problems at all, even with Norton AV set to scan emails in/out).
I then installed a Linksys wireless gateway (combo cable modem/router) and a
wireless pci adapter for my desktop computer.
I activated my high-speed internet connection (cable).
And, in short order, 'windows update' downloaded and installed SP2.
I can't recall for certain, because everything installed so closely
together, but I may have been able to use OE with high-speed connection prior
to SP2 (not sure).
I had a variety of problems seemingly resulting from SP2, so I uninstalled
it, then went to microsoft's site and downloaded/re-installed SP1 and current
updates up to but not including SP2. Most problems went away, but OE outbox
failure remains.
I did have to activate 'passive transfer' mode in order to use WS_FTP Pro
with the Linksys gateway, and I also checked a box on a list somewhere to
make WS_FTP an exception to the Linksys firewall (presumably to allow file
uploads). I don't remember where that list was, but I'm going to look again
and see if there's a check box for OE.
I'm only using the Linksys hardware firewall (not Window's), in order to
avoid multiple-firewall conflicts.
I suspect (in this order) that
1) SP2 wrecked my OE. Shall I re-install OE, or is there a way to restore
the existing installation? I'm reluctant to re-install unless I can preserve
my email and contacts.
2) The hardware firewall in my Linksys gateway is restricting outgoing email
from OE. If so, I'll have to track down the corrective settings.
Thanks for any additional input. It's frustrating when technology doesn't do
what it's supposed to, but encouraging when people show compassion!
