Bruce,
I appreciate your post. My apologies for the delay, I went out of town and
was away from my computer, so I'm just now re-visiting my frustration and
following up.
I tried your suggestions, neither of which seems to have solved the problem.
I can tell you that I was previously using OE with XP SP1 and Norton AV (NO
problems, even with email scan activated at that time).
I then installed a Linksys wireless gateway (combo cable modem/router) and
wireless pci adapter for desktop computer. And, 'windows update' followed
that shortly with an SP2 download and install.
I had a variety of problems that seemed to result from SP2, so I uninstalled
it. Then I went back to microsoft's site and re-downloaded/installed SP1 and
current updates up to but not including SP2. Most problems went away, but OE
outbox failure remains.
So, I suspect (in this order) that
1) SP2 wrecked my OE -- shall I re-download and install OE, or is there a
way to restore OE? I'm reluctant to re-install OE unless I can preserve my
existing email and contacts.
2) The hardware firewall (or some other conflict) in my linksys gateway is
restricting outgoing email sends from OE.
I do know that I had to activate 'passive' transfers to use WS_FTP Pro w/
the new linksys gateway, and I also checked a box somewhere that listed
WS_FTP Pro as an exception for the firewall (presumably to allow it to upload
files). I haven't been able to find that 'exceptions list' since, but I think
it must be linksys related and I'm about to look again...
I appreciate any suggestions you may have. It's frustrating when technology
doesn't do what it's supposed to, but encouraging when people demonstrate
compassion!
