My emails sometimes get delivered to my inbox, sometimes not

I have been using Outlook Express 6 during the last six
months or so and have had one particular problem which I
suspect is caused by the package. I have used OE6 to read
and send messages by POP with my hotmail account but on a
number of occasions I have not received mail that is sent
to me. The mail never appears in my inbox and on some
ocasions when I ask the sender to resend, it still does
not arrive. Eventually, if I receive the mail, I see that
from the very beginning, the sender specified the correct
email address, but it OE6 never displayed it.

I thought the problem was due to my hotmail account,
however now I have a different account using POP and the
same thing has happened. At least three important emails
did not arrive last week and god knows how many more I
have been sent and not received. Should I be using POP or
HTTP to receive mail - would this be a cause of some
emails getting lost?

I have Norton Antivirus installed on my computer and this
performs a scan of my outgoing and incoming mail.
However, I suspect that this is not the cause of the
problem. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated -
 this problem is affecting my ability to carry out my job,
