What do you mean by "lose the ability to use"?

Do you get an error message?

Have you previously closed them and are unable to open them? Or something else?

When you say you are logged out, what are you logged out of? Windows? A messenger
program? Something else?

Take a look at:

Microsoft was warned that having viruses, spyware, adware, etc. on your PC when you
install SP2 can lead to a corrupted install. So if you find some of these, you might need
to uninstall SP2 and reinstall after cleanup.
