It sounds like a user problem to me. I have XPsp2 and I am using
both POP3 and SMTP without any trouble whatsoever.
You said telnet on ports 110 and 25 timed out. That proves that
there is a blockage for those ports somewhere. What does XP's
Network Diagnostics detect? E.g. enter from a command window:
netsh diag gui
(Ignore failed ping tests if your site normally suppresses pings.)
Unfortunately I have yet to find a quick way of opening all the [+] items
so any expansions you need to do all seem to need to be done manually.
(Numeric * doesn't even work as expected to recursively open a nest
of closed items.) Further, it seems that when you save a report it saves
it exactly the way it was arranged when the save was done. At least you
can make all the data browsable by opening a saved report, pressing
Ctrl-a,Ctrl-c and pasting that into a new Notepad window. (The + are
a bit disconcerting but it appears that they just mean that that is the way
the item looked in the report; the data that you would see underneath
them after clicking on the [+] lines (converting them to [-] lines and
indenting the hidden data items) are there where you would expect them
to be, just not indented as much.
Hmm... I can't tell if the netsh diag gui command includes information
about the firewall. It doesn't look like it. Therefore to get more information
about it you would have to use the command line. See for example:
netsh firewall ?
Unfortunately I can't figure out what netsh firewall dump does.
It sounds like it would be exactly what we want.
Meanwhile I guess you will have to use
netsh firewall show ?
to query each possible item separately.
Good luck
