Lost icon in system tray

My neighbor used to have two small computers show up on his task bar when he
connected to the Internet. When he was receiving or sending data, they would
light up. Now he lost them. Any suggestions to get them
back in the Task bar?

OS is W98 SE and he is using Earthlink.
