Last time I looked at that page it indicated that for Password you
should use password. Perhaps they should have put that in italics? ;)
I very much doubt that that is the real password. I interpreted the page
to be telling someone who is authorized to use the NNTP server
(who would therefore know the real password or how to get it)
how to set up their newsreader.
The web interface uses HTTP protocol, not NNTP protocol.
Hence it may act as a relay program between a web user and the private
NNTP server and then would know the password in order to access
the server for anyone else who is not otherwise authorized to use it.
Another implementation possibility is that the web interface in an NNTP
context operates as an NNTP server which maintains its own cache,
so then any queries you make are done with that but it still wouldn't
eliminate the need for the web interface to be authorized to access
the private server in order to maintain its cache.
I'm not sure if the web interface is read-only or whether it permits updates
too but that is another possibility that either setup could enable or disable
easily.
