I don't know what else to tell you. Once the messages appear in the
NG, they are taking up space whether you have opened them or not. If
there is an attachment, it is in the original post so even if you
could delete only the attachment, you would not be able to view it
later unless you re-downloaded the original post.
As for messages being downloaded from the server, if you go to
Tools>Options>Read tab and uncheck: Get xxx headers at a time, you
should get all the messages that are available on the server.
Perhaps someone else will see this and offer their thoughts.
