Bruce,
No, I've not moved the newsgroup posts to another folder. I've downloaded
some of them, containing attachments, at which point the headers change from
bold to normal font. When I use Tools-Options-Maint-Clean up and either
remove message bodies, or delete headers and message bodies, followed by
Compact folders, it goes through pretty quickly. Then I go back to the
newsgroup and I still instantly see the headers, even if I restart OE. Most
of the headers are in bold, but those earlier downloaded are still non-bold,
and the attachments are instantly available if I open the posts. I have
DSL, approx 750 Mb/sec, and these attachments will normally take several
seconds to download, so I am confident they're not being downloaded again.
Removing the posts manually by your second suggestion got rid of everything.
I manually selected all of the posts. Then I pressed Delete and responded
to the "are you sure" message. It took quite a while to delete them
(hourglass). Then I did File>Compact all folders. Using Dir on a command
line, I see I picked up about a megabyte of free disk space.
But this method gets rid of the headers, and I never see them again. It
shows no posts in the newsgroup, so I can't go after other stuff. I see no
command to download all the posts from the server. Only posts which arrive
at the server later then the deleting ever appear. I could manually
selectively delete only those in non-bold, I suppose, but I still lose the
ability to see them and download them again if I want to.
I think this used to work. At least I thought it did. Seems to me the
downloaded headers went bold again. I'm beginning to think this isn't a
"how do I do this" question, but more a "what's wrong with this program"
question, which I don't really want to pursue. I'll wait for more stuff to
break, then eventually reload the entire system, as I occasionally have to
do.
But if I'm doing something wrong, and there's a way to remove the posts (and
attachments) to free up disk space, and still see the stuff in the
newsgroup, I'd like to know. Thanks so much for your help.
