Your IT staff could add SMTP AUTH access through port 587. It is allowed by
the RFCs governing email, and his ISP should not be blocking port 587 out.

There is a kludge, but it requires paying attention to the account list in
the new message compose window. With the same Identity, set up a second
account. Use the work SMTP settings for the one account, and the home SMTP
settings for the other account. This would also work for accessing the work
SMTP server through port 587, if the IT staff sets it up; one account
configured for the default port, the other configured, in the Advanced
settings, to use port 587.

There is a way to set up the address book to share email addresses with
different identities. It should be explained in the Help files; if the
method is not obvious.
