To get a better idea of what is happening turn on troubleshooting logging
for Mail. (Alt-T,O,Ctrl-Backtab,M)
That should allow you to capture in POP3.log the commands which
OE is using for the two attempts. Use those commands as a script
for entering the same commands manually while connected using
a telnet client. Actually for a start it would probably be sufficient
just to verify that using telnet instead of the second attempt with OE
is possible. If you don't even get a prompt from the server you will
know that the problem is with the server not OE.
It would be a good idea also to use netstat -a -o and see if there are
any open connections with your POP3 server. If so, I suspect that you
would have to find a way to close them before trying another connection.
Somebody else recently had a problem with his private news server for
a similar reason--the server wouldn't close the connection and apparently
thought he was trying to log on more than once with his userid.
Hmm... mentioning the other user's log on problem gives me the idea
that if you have multiple userids with that server that you could also try
a test consisting of: Send/Receive userid1 and Send/Receive userid2
(i.e. instead of Send/Receive userid1 Send/Receive userid1)
In that case I would expect the telnet test would have shown you a prompt
but then the second logon attempt would have been either ignored
(probably) or rejected.
Perhaps they just have an excessively long timeout. Have you tried
waiting a long time before making your second attempt? Turn off
the option which causes this to be done automatically every so many
minutes while you are testing this. (Alt-T,O,Alt-C)
You haven't given us any clue about your OS so it's difficult advising
you how to try to close residual connections if you find any.
Under NTx (non-Dialup) I would try ipconfig /release.
But perhaps your router can give you better control of such situations
anyway. Can its command interface be used to close any arbitray
connection?
Good luck
