Your failure to include a quote of the original message was no help, though
your message header's inclusion of the "Reference:" was. A Google on the
message ID in the reference tag turned up the original message, which wasn't
found in my message list; probably because the MSFT NNTP server retention
was greater than mine.
Your advice seems a little weak, given the full text of the original post,
which I snipped for brevity sake. An MVP responded with better advice, but
the weak spot with your advice is in the method of the import. While I
expect that letting MSOE recreate the basic folders, Inbox, Sent Items,
etc., then replacing them with the .dbx from the originals will, possibly,
work, it is not the approach that I would take.
I would copy the archived .dbx files to an empty folder in the file system,
then ensure that the file property, "Read Only" was cleared. Then I would
open the fresh install of MSOE, and run the Import utility, pointing it to
the folder with the .dbx files. Always works for me, anyway.
There is, possibly another problem, which your failure to quote missed, and
I did not requote it. But that other problem has a different fix, which you
failed to address.
You would do well to quote just enough of the message you are responding to
in order to provide a context for readers who may, for a variety of reasons,
not find the original post; at least not without some difficulty in have to
search based on the message references. Google is forever, but the MSFT NNTP
servers are not. They attempt a 60 retention, but server problems may lose
older posts sooner. A lot of people wouldn't begin to know how to find the
original posts you are responding too, and would know neither the context of
your suggestions, or whether the advice was sound (it is actually just a bit
lacking), or even applies to them.
There is no need to "full quote" the article you are responding to,
especially if it is a long, rambling article; but you should quote enough of
the original article to provide a context for your response.
