It's only an estimate, based on the information in the reference headers for
the message id. As such, it can often be in error due to messages being
cancelled, aged from the server, etc. I wouldn't pay much attention to it
or worry about it. In most cases, right clicking the newsgroup and
selecting CatchUp will clear the faulty guesstimate as to how many messages
are waiting.
