Turn on troubleshooting logging for news. (Alt-T,O,Ctrl-Backtab,w)

Then watch the NNTP [rx] 211 messages you get for that newsgroup.

If the server sends (e.g.) 211 aaa bbbbb ccccc <newsgroup name>
then any messages that you have which are numbered less than
bbbbb will be deleted from your cache. A consequence of this is
that if your server makes a mistake and sends an unnecessarily high
bbbbb then that can make OE delete an unnecessarily high number
of messages. If you discover that your server is prone to making
such "mistakes" then you may want to minimize the frequency that you
connect with it (to reduce the probability of connecting when it makes a
mistake.) You could do that by using a Synchronization command
and otherwise working primarily offline using your cache.

You can get a rough idea of what numbers you have by turning off
Group Messages by Conversation (Alt-V,V,G) and sorting by Sent
(Alt-V,B,Sent); then use Properties, Details to see if there is an Xref:
header. The Xref: header embeds the message sequence number in it.
Note that this sort depends on the accuracy of the posters' clocks
so it is usual to see the sequence shuffled somewhat, especially
if some of the posters are using the wrong timezone setting.

If you don't want messages deleted that way you would have to copy
the messages from the newsgroup folder to your own local copy of it.
