Gary,
Check his headers. There is no References: header in there.
Therefore, technically this was a new thread.
In fact, it was from the old web interface (CDO but not Tomcat).
If you go there and find the thread you will see that grouping of
threads with like Subject: is not done. BTW the same is true with
with the new web interface.
It only appears to be a reply to the first user of the Subject
because you are using OE which groups messages with identical Subject:
as if they were subthreads of one common discussion.
Sometimes that is usefully the case if someone copies the Subject
and then makes a new post rather than a reply.
But when the Subject is as completely non-descriptive as this one is
it is just as likely to be a new thread and just as likely to be totally unrelated
to the content of the previous threads having the same Subject.
BTW Google Groups often interprets such posts as part of the same discussion too. Then it is even more confusing because of the
extent
of its archive. E.g. posts which may appear months after the original
discussion ended may still be grouped as if they are continuations of it.
So you're correct to warn the poster of the confusion he is joining
and that many people consequently will often deliberately ignore him
but the real problem is that he is not using a distinct, descriptive subject.
FYI
