Downloading Email messages

I have Optimum Online ISP (cable modem) and an improved 1
Ghz HP Pavilion w/ W2K OS. The problem is not being able
to downloads all of my email messages on one try. Usually
what happens is that the mail POP3 server stops the
connection after waiting 1 minute, even though I selected
5 minutes on the Outlook Express tools tab. Sometimes I
have to try this cycle several times before all the
messages are downloaded. This only happens with Outlook
Express, not with the Webmail program that Optimum
provides. I tried disabling the firewall before
downloading the messages but it didn't help.
Does anybody knows what the problem may be?
