That usually happens when you have more than 999 contacts in your address book. See this link for more:

So I'm stupid, I know...got a new laptop and my key strokes are still weird.
Anyway, I'm typing one day and all of a sudden my Contacts tab in the lower
left hand corner was empty. I don't mean gone - it's still there, but there
isn't any of my ACTUAL contacts there. If I try to add a contact, it'll let
me - but they get filtered into my address book, and not displayed in the
Contacts tab! So what did I do? What did I turn off or turn on to not have
them displayed?
Any ideas would be helpful, unless they involve pulling, my head and my
arse. :-)
