Haunted Mansion - Chapter 13

I close the jewelry case, pick up my lantern and notice the ghost has disappeared again. I exit the room making sure I lock the door behind me. I turn away from the cellar to see where the tunnel will take me.
It is a long tunnel, I'm about ready to turn and retrace my steps back to the mansion when I see a closed wall ahead. This probably opens by a hidden spring also, as did the others. I have no luck this time. Try as I might, I cannot find a way to open it.

I turn....

Chapter 13

.... and head back to the mansion. The wall of shelves is still open, thank goodness. I step inside and push the stone again. It took several attempts, but the storage wall finally closed.

I'm not able to open the hidden panel to the narrow steps that lead to the wardrobe. Since this is the main part of the cellar, there should be no trouble finding the stairway. In the dim light I can make out a door ajar just across the room. I open the door to broad steps leading upward. The steps lead to the kitchen, close to the back stairway. I'm surprised I hadn't spotted this stairway earlier.

I take the back stairway upstairs. I return to the nursery to get the diary again. This time all is quiet. I sit in the big rocker again and open the diary.

~~~~~
"Mother Is not able to handle Dad alone and has found a girl to help with his care. She could hardly believe that the girl came from over here. She grew up in this neighborhood and often visited in this home with her childhood playmate. That makes mother feel all the closer to her."
~~~~~

"Dad is much better now and the doctor said it would do him good to get out. Mother wants to visit Little Harry's grave. It will soon be one year since Harry Jr. died. Mother said that Melody will return with them as she wishes to move back to the states now. She will remain stateside when Mother and Dad return home."

~~~~~
"The folks have arrived and Dad looks pale and drawn, but is getting around very well. It was hard on them to visit the cemetery. Dad has not forgiven himself for not being here when little Harry died. He felt he should have came when Mother did. He just wasn't feeling well at that time and the trip across the ocean would have been too hard on him. I wish he wouldn't worry about it, I feel it's not good for his health. I tell him he's here now and that's what's important."
~~~~~

"Melody returned home two days ago. She couldn't get over how nice our home is. She was so glad to get to see it again. She remembered attending services at the family chapel with her childhood friend. We even found the graves of the former family. She was surprised to see that her friend was also buried there. She had not been aware of her death as she was only 10 when she moved to England. We notice the friend died at the age of 12.

She had hoped to look her friend up, but there is no family left. An earlier plague had wiped out the whole family and much of the town at that time."

~~~~~
"The folks have embarked on their return passage. Dad just wants to be in his own home. Mother didn't dare stay here without him because of his health."
~~~~~

"Such a rainy night tonight, Sarah never did fear storms. I took her out on the verandah for a few minutes. She tries to put her little hands out to feel the raindrops. Even the muted thunder doesn't scare her. I have always loved the rain myself and would always take Sarah to the door with me to watch it. I'm sure she senses my lack of fear and it has been instilled in her.We watch for several minutes, but Sarah can hardly hold her eyes open. I put her to bed and sip a little brandy while I wait for Harry Sr. to arrive home."

~~~~~
The next page, I have already read:
("My baby, my baby... my precious baby is gone....)
So I continue on.
~~~~~

"The detectives have been unmerciful. They still think we have something to do with Sarah's disappearance. They say that it's very strange that no clues at all can be found."

~~~~~
"Harry Sr. is taking refuge in his work. He said he has been working almost nightly. But I wonder, I think he goes to a friend's house a lot too. He comes home smelling of brandy and says he can't stand being around here right now.
I am so lonesome."
~~~~~

"That detective Robert has been back several times, he says he believes me and wants to hear my story when the others aren't around. He stopped by tonight. The fireplace was lit to take the chill off, and he asked for a little brandy to warm up with. He invited me to join him. It was so nice to have somebody to talk to that really wants to help you."

Until the next time
