I hear noises and
mumbling coming from upstairs. We are not alone, someone or some thing is in
this chapel. Will Elizabeth's spirit be able to keep me safe? I wish I had
closed the door behind me. I look around and see that the spirit
has vanished. She accomplished what she wanted, by leading me to this key.
Now I still need
her help.
There is that cold
sensation again.
Chapter
9
All is quiet except for
muted mumbling. From where I stand, I can see the glimmer of a very soft glow
penetrating the darkness of the hidden stairway. I ascend the narrow steps and
from the landing can view figures kneeling. I assume they are in prayer but the
words are indistinguishable. Someone or something has lit some candles
creating the eerie lighting. I see a door here in the back, nearly hidden from
the light. I turn the oil lamp as low as I dare and creep across to what I'm
hoping is an exit. As luck would have it, it's jammed. Oh dear, I have been
heard. Something is stirring. I glimpse Elizabeth's ghost again hovering at the
door. The door opens, she beckons, and I quickly follow her out the side of the
church. There is a commotion inside and I hear muted sounds again. I turn
to look, but nothing ventures beyond the door of the family chapel.
I look around, and again
I am alone. I turn my light up a little brighter to enable me to retrace the
pathway back to the mansion. The backdoor opens easily. Again, I am in the
kitchen.
Entering into the
hall, I see that the spirit is waiting for me on the back stairway. Slowly she
ascends, turning now and then to make sure I am following her. At the top
of the landing she points to the locked door next to the stairs. I turn the
knob, but the door is still locked. She glides down the hall to the bathroom,
beckoning me. I follow and we enter the bathroom, where she motions toward the
linen cabinet. There must be something inside that I didn't find when I looked
through it eariler. I search the cabinet again, Again, nothing. Wait...
there seems to be a small hidden panel in here. Lifting the panel, I grope
inside and feel another key. Suddenly Elizabeth's spirit moves on down the hall
again. She still wants me to open that door next to the stairway. Maybe this key
will do it.
The key turns with ease
and the door opens soundlessly. The soft moonlight filters in through the trees
creating patches of dancing lace due to the stirring wind. It would look
very menacing if it were not for the fact that the ghosts sensed that I wanted
to help them.
It is another child's
bedroom . There is a small single bed, with a matching bureau, both elegantly
hand carved, a child's rocker, a large comfortable looking rocking chair, and a
large steamer type chest. Still setting in the child's rocker is a soft
stuffed toy and a little toy soldier.
I open the drawers in the
bureau, which contain only neatly folded children's clothing. All but the top
drawer.... It contained a birth certificate, a death certificate, and a small
bundle of papers wrapped in blue ribbon.
The birth certificate
states the youngster was born in England. Yes, I remember reading that Harry
came over from London. The death certificate lists the place of death as
'Residence.' The cause of death is listed as 'Plague.' Well
that can certainty cover a multitude of ailments
Opening the packet of
papers, I see they are records of passages aboard ship. It seems each trip
has been documented.
Here is one that records the trip from London by the three of them. Harry, Elizabeth, and Harry Jr.. That must have been when they moved to this country. I come across this
letter.
“Elizabeth Darling,
Please leave little Harry with us until you get settled in. Harry isn’t well
established in his work, and little Harry, I’m afraid, is doing without.
Harry was too proud to take any financial help from us, but don’t make the
baby suffer.
It is so lonesome
here, now that all of you are gone. You know that baby is like my very own.
I tended him after his birth and when you were in bed ill. If you won’t leave
the baby with me, then please, both of you stay here until Harry gets on his
feet in his business.
You are breaking a
grandmother’s heart.
Please let me hear from
you soon.”
With all my
love
Mother There is a second letter “Dear Elizabeth, You
haven’t answered my letter, and I miss you and little Harry so much. Your dad
told me to take a holiday and visit you. Don’t worry about my keep, as I am well
prepared to put food on the table for us. I have to tidy up some odds and ends
around here, then I’ll wire you my arrival time. Your father has told me that
he heard from Harry and that Harry told him you are looking forward to a
new arrival again. Darling, why didn’t you post me and let me know?
Mothers should hear this news from their daughters. Don’t you worry about
anything dear, I'll be there to help with anything you need."
With love,
Mother There seems to be no more
letters, just other official papers.
I think I better go back
to the nursery and get that diary. I need to read it more
thoroughly.
I rise to
leave......
See you tomorrow my
friends.........
