Re: Reinstall IE6 in W2000

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Don -

Did the IE6 reinstall this morning using KB318378 and KB 257249.

The install seemed to process very quickly (less than ten seconds) which
seems unusual but "Microsoft Internet Explorer SP1" now appears in
"Add/Remove Programs".

Unfortunately, IE6 still cannot access http://www.etax.dor.ga.gov.

I did find (either at Sandi's site or Kelly's Korner) a comment that IE
could not be "removed" if a service pack had been installed to W2000.
Believe the instruction was to uninstall the service pack, uninstall IE,
then reinstall the service pack.

Would it be worthwhile to uninstall SP4, try to uninstall IE then install IE
SP1?

One point I had not mentioned previously that still exists after the install
of IE6 SP1- clicking "help-about Internet Explorer" in IE6 returns an
message stating "An error has occurred in this dialog. Error 53: Not enough
storage is available to complete this operation."

The machine has two 224MB of ram and two 100gb hard disks with at least 85gb
open on each disk.

Does the Error 53 indicate IE6 may have some other problem that could be
causing the inability to access http://www.etax.dor.ga.gov?

Thanks for your input.

Tom

Hi,
This registry edit:
- - -
See this section "Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and
install Internet Explorer 6" of this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=318378 You will probably
have
to make that registry edit to reinstall IE6.
- - -
should eliminate the problem of IE refusing to install because "a newer
version of IE is already installed." Yes, that registry edit applies to
Win2000.

Don -

Just to clarify and confirm, KB318378 refers to XP.

Fixing the machine running W2000 is priority one as the accountant uses
it
(his secretary uses the XP Home machine).

Do I correctly understand the fixes we are discussing here (KB318378 and
IE6
reinstall) may be applied to both XP and W2000?

Thank you.

Tom

Hi,
Am I missing some cogent point here?

No. Go for the reinstall. You've looked at the most common problem
areas.

Appreciate your comment on KB318378.

Yes, have cleared the cookies, history, TIF's, and checked the HOSTS
file.

Also have flushed the dnscache and edited the nameservers in the
router
setup and in IP properties.

Still cannot access the one site and it is necessary because the
user
is
an
accountant and needs access to the site.

One of the other machines (it is running XP home) on the same
network
is
also unable to access the etax.dor.ga.gov website through IE6 but
can
access
the site through Mozilla Firefox - makes me more suspicious that the
IE6
configuration has somehow been trashed (maybe in running
adware/spyware
cleaners?) and is the reason I am pursuing a reinstall of IE6.

Am I missing some cogent point here?

Thanks.

Have one machine running IE6 under W2000 SP4 that is unable to
access
www.etax.dor.ga.gov. Other machines running IE6 under W2000 SP4
on
same
network can access www.etax.dor.ga.gov. Have reviewed settings
in
IE6
and
still no access to www.etax.dor.ga.gov on the problem machine.
Would
like
to reinstall IE6 without reinstalling the OS. Appears I can
download
IE6
SP-1 at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx.
Hopefully
the
reinstall will "overwrite" a damaged / corrupted file in IE6 and
resolve
the
problem. Appreciate any comments or suggestions before
proceeding.
Thanks.
