Re: SunJavaScript/Flash/IE6 Not Working right! Help?

Bleh ... LOL

OK, I went to that site with my ZAPro settings as is - was able to view the
comics fine in FF and IE. I looked in the firewall settings in Privacy -
everything's off, sun, java, macromedia, rr are in my site list as allowed.

FF is working better. No joy at all with IE. I tried adding the sites as
Allowed in Initernet Tools, Privacy. I even tried lowering Internet Zone
security to medium - default is High (trusted zone is already at medium as
default) there's another tab for Blocked Zone Security, which I've never even
used.

Default settings there - Gateway automatically check the gateway for
security enforcement
Internet Connection Sharing
This computer is not on an ICS/NAT network (whatever that means)
General
Allow VPN Protocol
Disable Windows Firewall are both checked
Network Settings
ask which zone to place new networks in upon detection
auto put new unprotected wireless networks (WEP or WPA) in the Internzet Zone

This is a stand alone, no wireless anything.

I added the above sites to my trusted zone under the Firewall tab, cleared
everything, rebooted. And ... no flash images, macromedia's still telling me
I need JS enabled (but it is), etc. ad nauseum.

All that is stuff I've never had to do or even thought about doing. I leave
things on default 99% of the time, mainly because I'm afraid I'll end up with
a mess like I've got on my hands now.

Using the Windows Firewall is, for me, not an option. I can't get my
homepage to open at all using that (IE or FF). There's a page and it's
almost like it's trying to load/reload super fast but nothing else happens.
I can't navigate anywhere using the Windows Firewall. I have doublechecked,
that is disabled. I've changed my a/v to AVG and not seeing any difference
there.

I'm really beginning to think SP2 just doesn't like me :( I do have an
XPHomeSP1 CD. I'm so tempted to see if I can get someone to get the "hidden"
part of the harddrive that has all the drivers, etc., put them on a CD and go
back to SP1. I just don't know if the drivers for audio, etc. would all
work. This is my first "retail" computer, only got a "recovery" CD, no O/S
disc and it's eMachines. They just giggle if you ask them for an actual
disc. And I don't have the $$ to buy a new retail version of XPSP2, most of
the people I know don't even have XP so I can't borrow a disc - they're all
on Linux.

Thanks again. I'm sitting here shaking my head in frustration. I've done
everything I think I can. Your suggestions have been great, unfortunately
they just won't work with my IE. I d/l IE 6 and went to install it, but got
an error that I have a newer version and it wouldn't continue setup. I was
willing to try that, just to see if it would work.

Hi,
If you turn on the Windows Firewall you'll be safe while experimenting with
settings in ZoneAlarm. If Firefox is also having problems with
Java/Javascript/Flash, that suggests that ZoneAlarm may be causing the
problem. The safe Mode test sort of implicates ZA. Check your ZA settings
against this page http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/fun/zonealarmhelp.asp But, I
would, in general, be trying to relax ZA settings with regard to scripting,
active content, etc.

Hi Don

OK, I did the refresh scripting tool, that seemed to install ok (no error
windows).

I don't have yahoo toolbar ... just messenger and when I installed that I
know I unchecked the toolbar (I hate all of them!). I did a quick search
for
files and folders on both Yahoo and Toolbar - nothing with toolbar showed
up.

Did the safemode=network (scary! I assume my Zone Alarm firewall wasn't
on?)
and got my homepage on IE to load completely, pics and all - once, then
got
the couldn't find server, something like that. Tried the macromedia test
page - got the "You need Javascript enabled to view this content" even in
safe mode.

Went to the addons and SSVHelperClass ssv.dll, SunJava Console ssv.dll is
enabled, along with shockwave flash object, real.com, acroIEHlperObj.Class
(Adobe), Windows Messenger.

I just tried disabling my EZ Armor a/v, rebooted and still can't get the
homepage to load or the Flash message to change (thought maybe it wasn't
"playing well" for whatever reason).

I did run a HijackThis log while in safemode - there doesn't look like
there's anything weird there since my first scan, the day I set the
computer
up.

I'm at a loss! Someone suggested I uninstall IE and reinstall it? I have
no idea where to do that (it's not in add/remove programs that I can see)
or
if it would do any good.

Thanks for your help and suggestions. I just wish one of them worked. I
gotta say, I really HATE SP2. I've never had so many problems with things
either not wanting to work (and I'm not good at "tweaking") or not working
at
all. Times like this I honestly miss 98SP2. Or even XPHome SP1. That
was
manageable. This SP2? I thought ME was bad.

If you think of anything else, please let me know.

You could try refreshing Windows Scripting. Go to

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp
for the appropriate download of Windows Script 5.6

But, it sounds like one of the security programs is blocking scripts,
scripting, active content. Check Add or Remove programs for the Yahoo
toolbar. Uninstall it if it's listed. Otherwise you'll have to look
through
the settings of those security programs for something like "block
scripts"
or "block active content."

The Safe Mode test should tell you whether the problem lies with IE or
another program, since most third-party programs don't load in Safe
Mode.

Hi Don

Thanks for responding.

I clear everything after any site is visited - something I've always
done.
I also went and put things on Default.

Checked Objects, Have Java 3 times, first has 4,096 bytes, version
5.0.60.5, other 2 have 0 bytes. Went to the Sun test page - got the
"dancing" icon. Went to Macromedia test page - Flash still says I
need to
enable JS. Looked at Tools - it is enabled. Still no images on my
homepage, still not able to get flash/JS based popup windows to open
(popup
blocker disabled).

I did click on the games link on my homepage, went to Gamehouse,
Texttwist.
It loaded, I played for awhile. Then opened the Java addon and read
this
(I
don't know what it means):

Init 2.4
Date Value 1148978012000
initializing BoomUser.class! v3.6
Found Points
Applet:housepoints.Points[panel0,0,0,1x1,layout=java.awt.FlowLayout]
(c) 2005 GameHouse, Inc.
No interface for texttwist.TwistNet
looping silent audio
stopped applet
Stop ret
destroy v2.4
destroyed applet
java.lang.InterruptedException

I use ZoneAlarm Pro 5.5, Java is in programs - Access Trusted,
Internet
Allowed; Server Trusted, Internet Not Allowed; Send Mail Not Allowed.
The
Components all have access. Windows Firewall disabled. Also use EZ
Armor
A/V, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, SpywareBlaster, CCleaner. Scans are run in
safe
mode (only time I use it or for updating video card drivers).

IE is the absolute worst with this, but it has started affecting FF -
I
have
to either refresh a page a few times or go to another page and come
back
for
a clickable link or popup (allowed) window to open.

As to using the safe mode=Network. I have no idea what it is I would
be
looking for. It's taken me 6 years to even figure out regular old
safe
mode.
I tried using the System Restore tonight, back to the day after I got
the
computer (23rd), but nothing in the Java changed except I have 2
entries
for
Java 1.5.02 in my firewall that don't go anywhere if I click on
properties.

I'm at my wit's end with this! Any ideas, suggestions, etc. are truly
appreciated. Thanks again.

If the problem goes away, a program that didn't load in Safe Mode is
causing
it. Look at security, privacy, ad-blockers, etc. to find that
program
and
change settings. You may be looking for an option such as block
scripts,
scripting, active content.

HI

OK, I recently got an eMachines T6528 - need a puter quick, old
one
died.
This does not come with a full install disc, just a "recovery"
disc -
don't
even know what's on it or if this would even fix my problem.

I used Roadrunner cable internet, homepage is flash-based. So,
installed
shockwave and flash as usual. Homepage will not show any images.
Go
to
Macromedia (adobe) test page - shockwave is fine, Flash test says
I
must
enable Javascript. 2 of us play on Neopets, which is flash based.
Can
see
pages/images, cannot play any games (flash popup window and yes,
popup
is
disabled when we play), I get a javascript error ! at the bottom
of
the
page.
If I click on the little icon, I see: !javascript:; Line: 128
Char:
21
Error: object doesn't support this property or method Code:0 URL:
http://
www
.neopets. com/games/carnival.phtml (as an example).

I've updated the Sun Java (had 1.5.2, now 1.5.6), I checked
Security/Advanced and it's checked for IE. Looked in Add-ons -
Java
is
there
and enabled.

IE version 6.0.2900.2180 currently. I tried d/l and installing IE
again,
but it's version 6.0.2800.1106 so it won't install. There is
nothing
in
my
Add/Remove programs to uninstall IE so I can try installing it
again
and
getting my updates.

I've not ever gotten that odd thing on a page that you have to
click
to
"activate" Active X content.

I tried d/l and running the Windows 5.6 and restarting - no joy.
I
tried
using IEFix, nothing. I did the "test" of going to the
bejeweled -
that
works. But just about everything else won't.

I have to refresh my home page 3 or 4 times just to see all the
modules
(sidebar RR uses) - but no images will ever appear.

I've never had to d/l or add on anything for any javascript or
play
around
in IE Tools before (never used SP2 before). I am using FF for
most
things
atm - Sun JavaScript is actually UNchecked for it and everything
works
fine.

Any suggestions, please? This is driving us nuts and I'm not
"techie"
friendly at all. Thanks.
