Yep...am getting the same on both:

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322;
.NET CLR 2.0.50727)

Any other suggestions other thsn my original of remove and reinstall SP2?
Am beginning to think maybe I should just reinstall the whole OS...

If the problem is that the install program is not recognizing MSIE 6.0
neither would help. I think you should report your observations,
including the diagnosis that you have tried, to the maker of the package.
Alternatively, if they have a support site go there and see if this issue
is already documented.

I would not uninstall XPsp2 or do anything as drastic as that without
finding out more about what this symptom really means.
One possible interpretation is that it's only something to the effect of:
"Something went wrong during the install. We have no way of notifying you
exactly what that something is but here's one thing that it might have been."
IOW I would ignore any specific implication from the text of the message
and just assume that it means "the install failed."

Within that looser context there are a lot more possibilities for what
could be causing that symptom. One might be too tight permissions
for the assumptions being made by the installer. That's a problem
we are seeing more frequently in installs of both products (e.g. IE7b2p2)
and updates.

Does the installer create a log file? Does it have an option for
verbose logging? That could be an easy way to get more clues
about the meaning of the symptom.

Another way is to activate your own tracing e.g. RegMon
(e.g., if you suspected a permissions problem in the registry)
or FileMon (if you suspected a permissions problem in the
file system.) Both tools are freeware from SysInternals.

Etc.
