OE and IE on XP

Ok, here is the situation. Graphics and pictures do not come through in
HTML messages. Also, I cannot copy parts of a message sent (can only select
"select all" and then copy that.
I can open attachments. I have set security to low and have allowed OE to
open potentially dangerous attachments. All recommended updates have been
downloaded and all are now installed.
This is a clean install (dual boot system with win98 on another drive).
Win XP was installed on a new drive. I am now almost exclusively using
WinXP. HTML messages download just fine in outlook 2000 (which is also on
windows XP). However, the same messages in Outlook Express do not show
(instead, there is an icon where there should be pictures or graphic files.
No antivirus program is running cause I have not installed any yet. I did
check http://aumha.org/a/noads.php and all is ok.
One more weird thing. Opening Internet Explorer (which seems to work fine)
I noticed a single letter at the top left corner. (seems like that used to
say Internet Explorer in win98) the letters vary, sometimes an A,
othertimes an M.
Please help. Would love for this system to be running right. And I do
prefer OE to outlook.
