[Subject: Remove IE6sp1 from WinXPsp2]
XPsp2 integrates the browsing functionality known as IE into the OS.
There is no standalone IE browser in that OS.
Therefore in order to remove the functionality you would
have to remove the service pack first.
Your Subject suggests that you might have installed IE6sp1
as a standalone browser into XP at one time. If that is the case
you might be able to uninstall it. However, that would depend
on what uninstalling XPsp2 gets you back to. E.g. if it returns
you to XPsp1 then you would still need to uninstall that too
before you would be able to see the IE6sp1 as an installed product
that you would have installed (standalone) into XP base.
I am having issues with IE on any webpage that I have to login. (i.e. School
Website or mail.yahoo.com I type id and password the login and I get "The
page cannot
be displayed.") I have tried repairing the install to no avail.
That may have been a mistake. If you don't have a slipstreamed CD
to do the repair with you may have regressed bits that IE needs to work
under XPsp2. You might be able to recover from that by installing
the latest cumulative security update to IE (e.g. hoping that doing that
acts as a kind of IE reinstall.) You don't have to visit WU to do that download.
You could visit the TechNet Security Bulletin Search site
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx
then scroll down to (or search for) the last entry labeled
"Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer",
link to that article and then find in that bulletin
a "Download the update" link for your OS.
E.g. currently 905915 is shown as the latest cumulative update for IE
and its security bulletin has a link labeled
"Internet Explorer 6 for Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2"
which points here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=E4B5BA57-D4F2-4798-9154-2869E371C9D1&displaylang=en
It also will not load the updatewindows.microsoft.com page.
If you can't even visit that download page you would have to use
another browser or another system to do the download
and manually transfer the downloaded file to your system.
E.g. use an OS in an alternate partition if you have one.
Can someone please help me get this uninstalled enough so I can get it to do
a fresh install?
A better tack might have been to try an appropriate repair procedure
such as the ones suggested in this article
<title>You cannot install some updates or programs</title>
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798
ANY help would be GREATLT appreciated.
Thanks,
Brent
Good luck
