I use Windows XP. When I installed Service Pack 2 (from the CD provided by
MSN), Internet Explorer was removed from my Program Files Directory, and IE
crashed. It also removed the IE shortcut icon from my desktop. In Program
Files there are now two new files: (1) iedw (an IE Crash Detection file,
which is an empty file), and (2) IEXPLORE.EXE-27122324-pf. When I select the
second file, it brings up a window saying that "Windows cannot open this
file" and it asks what program I want to use. I must select "Use the Web
service to find the appropriate program."
This is now the ONLY way that I can get a webpage to open. I have already
gone to MSN and downloaded the IE 6 cumulative security patch for SP2, but my
Internet Explorer file to launch IE and open a webpage is still not working.
Do you know how to reinstate Internet Explorer to the way it was prior to
the SP2 installation, so that I can open it from Program Files, and also
place an icon shortcut on my desktop?
