A recent update:
version 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633
Update versions: SP1, Q330994;Q837009;Q832894;Q831167;Q823353

The problem seems to crop up when I receive emails - something is getting reset so the next window I open in Explorer is set back to Medium fonts.

I never have gotten the background colors to display properly. Please help!
